Steelers Win Super Bowl
New York Times
Published Monday, February 6, 2006
The Pittsburgh Steelers, powered by one of the trick plays that have become a trademark of Coach Bill Cowher, beat the Seattle Seahawks for their fifth Super Bowl victory. Only two other teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers, have won five Super Bowls.
The Steelers were almost upstaged by the Rolling Stones.During the halftime show in a game that was televised live Monday morning across Asia, the Stones sang three songs and were censored in two of them - not a bad average for a band of sexagenarians who still ride a reputation as provocateurs.
The trick play came in the fourth quarter when the most valuable player of the game, Hines Ward, caught a 43-yard touchdown pass thrown by receiver Antwaan Randle El.That touchdown gave the Steelers their 11-point margin of victory and ended the feel-good final season of Jerome Bettis.
It was the quest to get Bettis, a Detroit native who had never played in a Super Bowl and who is called the Bus, to the title game in his hometown, that had driven the Steelers this season. After the Steelers lost to the New England Patriots in last year's American Football Conference Championship game, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger pleaded with Bettis to play for one more year so he could get him home. Bettis, who is 27 years younger than Mick Jagger, retired after the game.
"Here's one we could have done at Super Bowl I," Jagger said, introducing "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," a 1965 hit. "But everything comes to he who waits." The two unheard words in the miniset - from "Start Me Up" and from a song on the latest Stones album, "Rough Justice" - were sexual references. But then again, so was most of the performance, from the stage shaped like the band's lascivious lips-and-tongue logo to Jagger's hip-swiveling, elbow-pumping, gleefully leering presence. His cropped-top shirt showed his navel, and, of course, he sang "Satisfaction."
There was no question that the songs were live, as Keith Richards and Ron Wood played tandem guitar parts that constantly jostled each other, and Jagger toyed with the timing of his leathery vocals.
